Beach festival was organized by the district administration in association with the DTPC as part of Christmas and New Year celebrations. However, the DTPC officials say that since the beach is under the authority of Alappuzha port, there are limitations in the smooth conduct of the festival.
"The festival got good response. Both foreigners and domestic tourists participated in the celebrations here. We are planning to develop a master plan for beach tourism without hampering the natural beauty of the beach. An agency will be appointed for conducting a feasibility study of the proposal," said district collector N Padmakumar.
DTPC secretary C Pradeep said they have approached port minister K Babu to get the ownership of the beach from Alappuzha port. "The minister said he will hold a meeting with officials of the Port and the tourism department in this connection soon," he said.
In 2004-2005, the district administration and the DTPC executed Alappuzha beach beautification project at a cost of Rs 680 lakh. It was completed under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme (TRP) of the Union Government in 2010. Restaurants, shops and new toilet blocks were set up. The collector said the new proposal will add to the beauty of the beach.
Meanwhile, Alappuzha port officials said they are not ready to hand over the beach to DTPC. "The port department has begun steps for developing Alappuzha Port into a Marina-Cum-Cargo Port. So we are not ready to hand over the ownership of the beach to the DTPC," said an official.
