Learn to speak right if you dream to be leader
If you notice carefully, leaders are known for their speaking ability. Be it in a meeting, delivering a lecture or making a presentation, they put across their viewpoint in a manner that can be understood by the listeners without any confusion. Unless people develop this ability, even if they are specialists in their field, they are likely to remain in second rung positions. Their inability to converse and convey ideas or explain their stand on different issues that arise at the workplace leaves them behind when it comes to the leadership race. Why is that to be a leader one should be a good leader? Leaders don many roles in an organisation. The whole set up revolves around this particular individual. It is this person who can take the company to new heights in business, bring in profits and turn it in to an organisation that is held in esteem both in the business domain and public view. Leaders constantly interact with different sets of people, different groups and with people in authority like lawmakers, persons holding high political office and thought leaders. If these interactions are to be fruitful and ultimately result in benefit or success for the organisation, the leader must be extremely articulate to address every situation and every person he meets in the daily course of his actions. Peak performance: Leaders are prime motivators for people in any organisation. The zeal and passion they display in the discharge of their functions is a big motivating factor. But will that alone lead to others also to perform at their best? Leaders take time out to interact with staff periodically to motivate them. They lose no opportunity to explain why the organisation has embarked on a particular plan or process. They welcome questions and doubts from all levels. They clear these doubts in a manner that others are able to see the advantages. People tend to perform better when they understand the perspective of every action of the management. Deal: Making business deals is the most important of functions of a leader. Deals call for negotiations. Unless the leader has the capacity to put across the benefits that the client will derive on concluding the specific deal, the negotiations will fail. Business will dwindle. Being able to counter the client’s demands in a manner not offending but convincing through unbiased explanation will end in the deal being successfully negotiated to advantage. Leaders cultivate the art of public speaking. Public speaking does not always mean addressing an election rally or making a speech at a huge gathering. Selling your new software developed to enhance a company’s CRM by making a presentation to five directors of a prospective company, calls for the same skills. The success of the presentation here depends more on your ability to showcase the product’s benefits rather than the actual performance of the product in relation to a competitor’s.How do leaders become good public speakers? Some have the natural ability, but a majority of them very early see the advantage of being able to communicate effectively as the key to success. Shun shyness: Leaders are never shy to speak. They seize every opportunity to speak. Be it orientation for new employees, a farewell party or even at a picnic, they are ready to take the mike. Without hesitation they say what is to be said on the occasion. The gathering may be small or huge; it does not matter to them. As the situation demands they tailor their talk to the time. They keep it relevant and do not engage in rhetoric. Words: Leaders make efforts to enhance their vocabulary. They have a choice of words to dot the speech with and are able to put across thoughts with ease and the listeners tend to be interested. They can hold sway on the audience. They garner the attention of people. Some action: Each leader has developed a style of delivery of his speech. They make appropriate gestures. Their body language conveys a sense that they mean what they talk. Mannerisms are on show to the minimal. This is a way to constantly grab the attention of the audience. If the delivery seems to come from a loudspeaker and not a live speaker, the audience can be seen yawing or inching to the nearest exit. Practise these speaking habits early in your career else the chance to be a leader may slip quietly by your side.
