Forty-three people have died in landslides caused by torrential rains in the last two days in the hill district of Nilgiris in western Tamil Nadu. Officials of the flood control centre in Udhagamandalam, popularly known as Ooty, told that 14 died on Monday and another 29 on Tuesday. "The victims included men, women and children and they were either washed away in floods or buried in landslips", they added. All the casualties were reported from Ooty, Coonoor and Kothagiri taluks while Gudalur on the Kerala side of the western ghats escaped the rain fury. Coimbatore Taxi News
Udhagamandalam district collector Ananda Rao Patil told reporters that people living in slopes had been advised to move to upper reaches of the mountains and take shelter in schools and government buildings. He said it would take at least a month to repair the Ooty-Kothagiri-Mettupalayam road battered by rains and blocked by boulders and uprooted trees. The district administration has advised tourists to stay off Ooty till the road traffic is restored. At the moment, the district remains cut off with vehicular traffic suspended. The three taluks of Ooty, Coonoor and Kothagiri received rainfall ranging from 29 to 31 cm in the last 24 hours, the local weather office in Chennai said. An official told reporters here that the depression in the Arabian Sea in the west coast had intensified and lay centred 500 km off Mangalore. Under its influence, Tamil Nadu would get heavy rains in the next 24 hours, he warned. Meanwhile, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced after a review a solatium of Rs 1 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the rains in Nilgiris. He also asked two Ministers to rush to Udhagamandalam to oversee relief. Relief operations were on in full swing, officials said. Tamil Nadu has been in the grip of heavy rains for the past one week caused by a depression in the Arabian Sea. Police said 30 people have died in several other districts in the State. Most of them died in house collapse. At least ten were struck by lightning. - Asian Tribune -
